Reforestation in Headwaters: Natural Infrastructure for Project Viability

In a context where climate change and poor land management increase the risk of natural disasters, N&P—leaders with more than 20 years of experience in land management—is convinced that reforestation in the upper parts of watersheds has ceased to be a social responsibility action and has become a strategic “natural infrastructure” tool.

When the headwaters of a watershed lose their vegetation cover, water runs off uncontrollably instead of being stored in aquifers. According to technical data from N&P, bare soil loses its infiltration capacity, transforming rainfall into operational and social threats.

The data is compelling: forested land has an absorption capacity up to 18 times greater than bare soil and 4 times more than pasture areas. Without this protection, the risk of erosion and huaycos increases exponentially, threatening to paralyze multi-million dollar operations.

Critical Water Impact: Without vegetation to retain the resource, rivers like the Rímac can go from a normal flow of 15 m³/s to peaks of 100 m³/s during the rainy season, affecting the safety of populations and industrial infrastructure.

Operational Risks: The lack of intervention leads to soil loss and flooding that compromise the continuity of large-scale projects.
